READY TO GET STARTED?

What is Platelet Rich Plasma?

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is a concentration of platelets, which can accelerate healing. The process of using PRP to treat an injury/ condition involves drawing a small amount of the patient’s blood, concentrating their platelets from the rest of the blood sample that is drawn using a specialized centrifuge, then injecting the product precisely in the region of the identified injury under direct visualization (fluoroscopy or ultrasound). PRP accelerates the body’s healing process and may lead to a more complete recovery. Platelets contain packets of natural growth hormones and proteins that send signals to your tissues to increase tissue rebuilding and enhance your recovery. The final product may contain concentrated platelets 5 – 6 times over baseline along with growth factors. PRP has proven to be an effective natural alternative to steroid injections.

If you are interested in PRP therapy, contact Southwest Spine & Sports in Scottsdale, AZ, to schedule a consult. Our team is always excited to discuss all the benefits of PRP and how it can help to improve your health.

What are the Benefits of PRP therapy?

There are newly published studies coming out that support the use and demonstrate the benefit of PRP in the treatment of soft tissue injuries, like tennis elbow, rotator cuff tendinitis, and degenerative arthritis affecting joints, like the knee. Some of these various benefits include:

  • Reduced swelling and inflammation
  • Pain relief
  • Minimally invasive treatments
  • Lasting relief of symptoms
  • Improved joint function
  • Repair of damaged cartilage

Who is a candidate for PRP therapy?

Candidates for PRP therapy may be looking to effectively treat an injury or condition without the downtime associated with surgery. These can include sports or repetitive injuries. Growth factors in PRP can also be a more natural alternative to other types of treatment. Results can last for several months, and additional treatments can be provided to help maintain your outcome. During a thorough consultation at Southwest Spine & Sports, our team can evaluate your condition and determine if PRP therapy is ideal for you.

PRP for Joint Pain

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is a safe, effective and all-natural way to heal damaged joints, including shoulders, knees, hips, ankles, fingers, and more. PRP consists of a small sample of your own blood, spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets and then injected into the injured area. Medical research and intensive studies are leading the way to the tremendous benefits offered by PRP for patients suffering from low back pain, with the goal of enhancing the body’s ability to naturally heal itself. Q

Where does PRP come from and how does it work?

A sample of your blood is taken under sterile conditions. The blood is placed in a specialized centrifuge that spins the blood twice. Once to eliminate RBC and isolate your plasma, then a second time to concentrate the platelets within your plasma. What is created is known as PRP.

Using ultrasound guidance, the PRP is injected into the injured area with precision. PRP stimulates a healing process. It increases blood flow to the area, repairs damaged tissue, reduces inflammation, and promotes new cell growth, often resulting in faster, fuller healing. PRP is a great solution for sports and repetitive injuries as it can offer a quick recovery and is non-surgical.

Experience Restorative Healing

With PRP therapy, you can experience restorative healing to various areas of the body. Our team at Southwest Spine & Sports is proud to offer this innovative treatment for our Scottsdale, AZ patients. To learn more about this procedure, contact our office to schedule an appointment.

What can I expect after a PRP treatment?

After the injection, you may experience some discomfort at the injection site for a few days. You may have to reduce your activity level for up to two weeks post-procedure. We recommend you steadily increase your activity level as the movement becomes more tolerable. The full benefit of a PRP injection is slow and gradual. You may keep experiencing improvements for 3 – 4 months.

Platelet rich Plasma Therapy FAQs

Most patients don’t find PRP therapy to be painful. The blood draw to harvest the PRP feels like any other blood draw, which usually feels like a small pinch. When the PRP is injected into the treatment location, some minor discomfort may be felt, but we can use a topical numbing cream or local anesthetic to make you more comfortable.

The number of injections necessary to reach your treatment goals will be the largest determining factor of cost. During your consultation, we will review your medical history and current health to create a personalized treatment plan. Once your plan is finalized, we will be able to estimate your costs.

Results are unique for each patient, but many patients can expect to see their results last up to 12 months before a maintenance procedure may be recommended.

How quickly you will see results depends on a number of factors, including treatment area, type of issue or injury, your body’s healing ability, and more. However, within about 4 – 6 weeks, most patients begin to notice improvements and positive results.

PRP therapy is generally considered safe as it utilizes your own blood to stimulate healing. However, there are some potential side effects like infection, nerve damage, and pain at the injection site. Always consult the team at Southwest Spine & Sports for a comprehensive evaluation to determine if PRP therapy is suitable for you.

The number of PRP therapy sessions needed varies depending on the severity of the condition and your specific needs. Typically, a series of 1-3 injections is recommended for optimal results. Your doctor at Southwest Spine & Sports will discuss a personalized treatment plan with you.

"I went to see Dr. Wolff in April for lower back pain. I have received over the last 8 years numerous cortisone injections as well as RF to alleviate my pain. This treatment was temporary and the pain always returned. A firefighter friend of mine went to see Dr. Wolff and she received PRP treatment for her injury. Dr. Wolff and Carole are such great kind and caring people. Dr. Wolff suggested and explained the treatment and listened to my many questions. Dr. Wolff then injected my back with the PRP and to date I'm 60% better. Today, I am receiving one additional injection to my stubborn S-I joint. Fingers crossed this final one will do the trick. I would recommend Dr. Wolff and his RN Carole to anyone who hasn't had relief from any other treatment for lower back pain."

"Dr. Wolff was very thorough with my consultation. He explained my options for treatment and made me feel more like a close friend or family member not just a patient. All of the staff I have interacted with have been very helpful and caring. I can’t say enough good things about Callie, she is quick to respond to emails and get me everything to prepare for my Discseel procedure. My procedure went smoothly, Dr Wolff found a tear in my disc which explained my pain being so high. Pre procedure I couldn’t sit at all if I did it would be painful and standing up and walking was difficult. I can sit and eat with my family for the first time in over 8 months I am so thankful for the Discseel® procedure it kept me from having surgery and fusing my lower back."

"Following years troubleshooting chronic back pain with no success, I was introduced to Dr. Wolff who identified my key issues and offered a number of solutions.  After confirming I would be an ideal candidate, I opted for the Discseel® procedure, and, as discussed, my back pain began improving within a matter of weeks.  Six months later, I am pleased with the results while I progress through physical therapy and continue to improve. I am grateful for Dr. Wolff and the staff at Southwest Spine & Sports for helping me work through a serious condition and making the entire process rather painless."
