What Is BOTOX®?

Most people know about BOTOX® due to its cosmetic uses for relaxing wrinkles and freezing facial muscles. In recent years, though, BOTOX® has been applied to treat painful, non-cosmetic conditions because of its properties for fighting muscle movements in other body areas. At Southwest Spine & Sports, BOTOX® is used to treat chronic migraine, upper limb spasticity, and the effects of cervical dystonia. If you have any of these conditions and want to learn more about the preventative therapeutic ways BOTOX® can be performed, contact our office in Scottsdale, AZ to set up a consultation today.

How Can BOTOX® Treat Migraine, Upper Limb Spasticity, and Cervical Dystonia?

Chronic Migraine

A migraine is a type of headache that can initially present as a dull aching sensation which then transitions to a constant throbbing, pounding, and pulsating pain that is felt on the side of the head. Chronic migraine is defined as individuals having 15 or more headache days per month, lasting for four hours or more. Chronic migraine headaches may worsen, limiting the ability to perform daily activities. BOTOX® is injected into the muscles in the head and neck to treat chronic migraine. It reduces muscle activity by irreversibly blocking the presynaptic release of acetylcholine into the neuromuscular junction.

Upper Limb Spasticity

Upper limb spasticity occurs when the muscles in the arm are constantly contracted (shortened) and stiff. This can cause unusual and uncontrollable muscle movements in the arm that can be extremely painful. People with upper limb spasticity may also have trouble coordinating the movement of their arms or be forced into uncomfortable positions. Your practitioner may recommend therapeutic BOTOX® injections to help halt muscle activity, relieve muscle spasms, and obtain the best results during a course of physical therapy.

Cervical Dystonia

Cervical dystonia is a disorder that involves the neck muscles tightening up or going into involuntary spasms. This may cause the head to lean to one side or be pulled forward or backward. Individuals may also experience tremors. Cervical dystonia is thought to be associated with the nerve signals sent from the brain to the affected muscles, telling the muscles to contract or spasm. BOTOX® works in the injected muscle by blocking the nerve signals that tell the muscle to contract and spasm. As a result, muscle contractions may be reduced, posture may be improved, and the intensity and frequency of neck pain may be reduced.
